It seems that Apple is going to let app developers in on the front-facing camera fun, if the latest update from Fring is anything to go by.

Version 3.2.0.5 of Fring, which has just hit the App Store is not only iOS 4 ready, it also allows you to use the front-facing camera to make video calls and, unlike Apple's own FaceTime, it doesn't require Wi-Fi - it will work over 3G as well.

It also means that you don't need your pals to be using iPhone 4s either - you can make calls to any device that Fring is compatible with.

Fring allows you to connect with your social networking buddies from an array of different services including Skype, ICQ, Google Talk, MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger, AIM, and Yahoo Messenger.

You have to sign up for a Fring account, and then configure all of your various messenger usernames and passwords, but once you've done this, it's fairly straightforward from there on in.

We gave it a test run this morning, using an iPhone 4 calling up a Skype desktop client and it worked well.

Still, even holding the iPhone at arm's length the video was still a big close-up of the face. But that isn't Fring's fault - that's an issue with all video calling including FaceTime.
