Nikon president Makoto Kimura has told Bloomberg that the Japanese camera giant is planning on releasing a "new concept" camera within the current financial year.
The camera is set to include a mirrorless structure that, if true, will rival the Micro Four Thirds SLRs on offer from Panasonic and Olympus. Sony also released the NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras that use the mirrorless system earlier this year, and Ricoh and Samsung are also both reportedly planning similar mirrorless devices as well.
The report also states that the new camera would feature enhanced video shooting capabilities.
The announcement came as Bloomberg reported a rise of 21 per cent year-on-year of the global shipments of digital cameras.
With many predicting the demise of the standalone camera as a result of more advanced camera phones, it seems that the world is instead becoming more camera equipped, especially when it comes to SLR cameras - there was a rise of 42 per cent year-on-year for these devices.
Nikon is obviously aware of the emerging markets - and will hope its hint of a new concept camera will be enough to whet the market's appetite.
