PS3 3D Blu-ray update in September - 3D photo update to follow

It has been revealed that the 3D Blu-ray update "available in the Fall" will actually hit consoles sometime in September. Additionally, that won't be the end of the 3D upgrades, as a further patch will arrive later to bring 3D photo compatibility to the machine.

Sony has launched two new Cyber-shot cameras that take panoramic 3D pictures, so it is imperative that the company's games console/multimedia machine is capable of displaying them. The firmware update will allow the PS3 to read .mpo filetypes and present them on a compatible 3DTV.

However, Mick Hocking, senior director at SCEE, is keen to stress that, while Blu-ray movies and still photos will be at the forefront of the 3D revolution, it is gaming that will drive adoption: "We think games are going to be the killer content for 3D", he told Pocket-lint. "In general, we find that 3D enhances all types of games. There are no types that it doesn't bring a benefit to".

"We think the games this year are going to do the same [as Avatar did for movies] for the gaming community".

Forthcoming titles to adopt 3D, he revealed, are Killzone 3, Motorstorm Apocalypse and, the much anticipated, Gran Turismo 5.
