Long term, this could be very bad for Microsoft

Chrome OS coming to Dell laptops

The blossoming romance between Google and Dell seems to be in full swing. Firstly Dell chose to have an Android OS on its Streak tablet/big phone. And now, a Dell bigwig has come out and declared a love for all things Chrome OS.

Speaking to Reuters, Dell's president for Greater China and South Asia, Amit Midha hinted that Chrome OS would be spearheading a revolution in computing and that Dell wanted to be a part of it. He said:

"We have to have a point of view on the industry and technology direction two years, three years down the road, so we continuously work with Google on this.

"There are going to be unique innovations coming up in the marketplace in two, three years, with a new form of computing, we want to be on that forefront ... So with Chrome or Android or anything like that we want to be one of the leaders".

Chrome OS is due out later this year and Google has high hopes for its first foray into the world of PC operating systems.

The comments by Midha will of course fuel speculation that Dell may drop Microsoft as its OS developer of choice, but with Chrome OS likely to be a work in progress and still somewhat of an unknown quantity for a time, it's unlikely that a huge distributor like Dell will take such a drastic overhaul to its existing procedures.

However, the "two, three years" comment does indicate that Microsoft is going to face fierce competition from Google in the OS market place in the years to come.
