Trying to compare a modern smartphone with the Sonim XP3 Sentinel is a pointless exercise. Sure you might be able to play Donkey Kong Country on your Nexus One, but if you drop it in a puddle chances are that you won't be playing anything on it after that.

The XP3, on the other hand, may not be as feature ridden as an Android device or offer you the choice a gazillion apps like the iPhone, but drop this bad boy in a puddle and not only will it keep on working, it will probably scream for more.

The XP3 is designed for people who are a bit more Bruce Parry than Bruce Forsyth. It's a tough, rugged s-o-b, that will keep you safe in even the most extreme conditions. As well as being able to withstand being submerged in 2m of water for 30 minutes, it is also humidity proof, salt proof, shock proof and heat proof. In fact, temperature wise it is able to function between an icy -20 degrees Celsius and a sauna like 55 degrees Celsius.

Using the traffic light warning system of red, amber and green buttons, and in partnership with Peoplesafe, TrackaPhone, SafelinQ and the GEOS Alliance, you'll always be findable with the XP3 by your side.

The red button is for emergencies. It logs your GPS location and sends it to the emergency call centre who'll send help your way. It resends the location every three minutes with a lifespan of 24 hours. The amber button lets the call centre know that you're setting out on a dangerous path and the green button tells them that you're all safe and sound.
