Sony is well and truly gunning for 3D success for the PS3 with the announcement of high-definition stereoscopic 3D gaming and the latest firmware update. It was also bigging up the service at E3 over in LA.

But Sony's big rival Microsoft has hit back, stating that users are not yet ready to fork out the expense to make 3D gaming a reality.

Speaking to Afterdawn, Microsoft's UK boss Neil Thompson said its focus was well and truly with Kinect for now:

"If you look at the costs of entry into the living room and when that's going to become mass-market, we think the offering with Kinect and the natural user-interface we're bringing, that's a more compelling proposition for consumers over the coming years than maybe looking at 3D at this point".

3D gaming was one of the biggest talking points at E3. Obviously Sony had a fair bit to say, and Nintendo also officially announced its 3D handheld, the 3DS.

We can see where Thompson is coming from, as 3D TVs are certainly not cheap, but we think that the attraction of a new wave of 3D games may just be too tempting for serious gamers to resist.
