There are a couple of different approaches to tablets that we’ve seen at Computex in Taiwan, either they’re netbooks or low power notebooks running full-on versions of Windows, or they’re powered by various ARM processors and usually running Android. Besides the Wind Pad, MSI is also working on a second tablet, currently known as the Wind Pad 110, and it’s the latter kind of device.
The model shown is far from ready for prime time and we're told by MSI that we shouldn’t expect it to arrive until the end of this year at the earliest. The Wind Pad 110 features Nvidia’s Tegra 2 dual core ARM processor, so it should offer good battery life, but still handle everyday tasks with aplomb.
Google’s Android OS is gaining a lot of popularity and we’ve seen several tablets running it. But as the Wind Pad 110 is an early prototype that still needs a lot of tuning, the OS wasn’t running all that well.
One interesting design feature that MSI has come up with, is to make the short ends of the Wind Pad 110 slightly curved for a better grip, especially for one handed use. It might be hard to see how this is done from the picture, but the part after the blue line is actually slightly curved.
MSI told us that the Wind Pad 110 might not make it to retail, at least not in its current incarnation. It should be considered a prototype for the time being and something that we might get to see sometime next year. Fingers (and toes) crossed.
