Garmin has just announced the launch of the GPSMAP 62 series of rugged handheld GPS devices. The news is sure to get all would-be adventurers hot under the collar, but somehow we can't see the more hardcore walkers/ramblers giving up their OS maps just yet.

The range is divided up into the GPSMAP 62, the GPSMAP 62s and the premium GPSMAP 62st. All the devices get a 2.6-inch sunlight-readable colour display, up to 20 hours battery life and quad helix antennas for decent reception.

With the 62s you'll get a 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass and wireless connectivity enabling you to share routes and tracks between other compatible Garmin handhelds, as well as a barometric altimeter.

Meanwhile the 62st adds 1:100,000 scale recreational mapping with street-level detail, land use descriptions of 33 countries across Europe and a POI search by name or proximity.

All are waterproof and prices will start from £259.99.
