VIDEO: Sony gives a glimpse of the future with rollable OLED

Fantastic display of future tech from Japanese giant

Sony has been showing off its incredible 80μm-thick flexible OLED display which is so futuristic that even Marty McFly hasn't seen one before.

The display uses organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with an original organic semiconductor material that has eight times the current modulation of conventional OTFTs.

Sony managed to do this by combining this OTFT technology with the latest advancements in OLEDs to produce the 4.1-inch, 121 ppi, completely rollable display. It uses a super-thin 20μm-thick flexible substrate and soft organic insulators for the integration circuit.

The result is what Sony describes as "the world's first OLED panel which is capable of reproducing moving images while being repeatedly rolled-up". To prove the point Sony has released a video, which shows the display being continuously rolled around a cylinder with a radius of 4mm and then stretched out again.

Sony is planning to demonstrate more of this tech at the Society for Information Display conference, which is currently under way in Seattle. We'll be sure to let you know if it demos anything even half as cool as this.

Just goes to show that you don't need a DeLorean to see the future, you just need to keep reading Pocket-lint.
