Nokia and Yahoo to take on Google Maps

24 May 2010 17:25 GMT / By Paul Lamkin

Yahoo and Nokia are joining forces to take on Google in the mobile web-sphere. It's a deal that will see Nokia's Ovi powering Yahoo maps and Yahoo returning the favour by taking the reigns of Ovi's email and instant messaging services.

Log ins across the two platforms should become uniform as well, making it easier for users to switch between the various services without constantly needing to type in their usernames and passwords.

Carol Bartz, CEO of Yahoo, said: "We're excited to expand the reach of our best-in-class Mail and Messenger services, bringing personalised experiences to more people across the mobile Web, particularly in emerging markets where we are seeding the next generation of Yahoo users.

"At the same time, we believe Nokia's strength and continued investment in maps and navigation will greatly enhance our existing products, enabling us to focus on areas that are core to our business".

Nokia wasn't shy in coming forward with their gushing opinion of Yahoo as well. Its CEO, the brilliantly named, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said: "Yahoo's online expertise will bring exciting mail and messaging enhancements to millions of Ovi Mail customers across almost every country around the world, many of whom will have their first Internet experience on their mobile".

These services are expected to become available from the second half of this year, with global availability expected in 2011.

Do you use any of the Yahoo or Ovi services already? Can this partnership really convince people to come away from the big G? Let us know if you'll be entering into the Yahoo/Ovi love-in.
