Dell Streak heading to Carphone Warehouse

Coming soon, Android 2.1 promised later in year

Dell Streak heading to Carphone Warehouse

24 May 2010 16:43 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Carphone Warehouse is clearly excited about the Dell Streak (previously called the Dell Mini 5) as they're publishing information ahead of the supposed official launch expected this week.

"We're excited about the Dell Streak, a 5 inch Android tablet that does it all and then some!" says someone writing for the site under the "coming soon" section; unwittingly confirming the UK name.

That excitement also leads to confirmation of many of the tech specs and details of the new model and follows the gaffe made by Dell CEO, Michael Dell, last week where he confirmed that it would be "available starting next month, first with our partner O2 Telefonica in Europe, then later this summer with our pretty good partner here in the United States, AT&T".

The very "first tablet to be available through The Carphone Warehouse", the Streak is a 3G tablet with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi internet tablet first and phone second.

Hardware, however, doesn't seem to have changed much since we first saw it back in January at an exclusive showing where we were the only UK press in attendance.

To give you a recap, the Dell Streak runs the Android operating system (version 1.6) comes with a 5-inch WVGA Gorilla Glass 16:9 ratio touchscreen display, a 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a front-facing VGA camera, and a 5-Megapixel lens with autofocus and a dual LED flash. Users will get a 16GB microSD card pre-loaded in the box and there's GPS too.

While it's still packing Android version 1.6 at the moment, Dell, says Carphone warehouse, will be giving the Streak an "over-the-air Android upgrade for Streak, complete with full flash 10 support, which will be available a bit later on in the year."

Carphone Warehouse wouldn't be drawn on UK operators or availability when we phoned on Monday, although a spokeperson did say they would be able to release more details very very soon.

We will keep you posted.
