Motorola buys mobile OS makers Azingo

Motorola's co-CEO, Sanjay Jha, is a big believer in mobile companies owning the software platform that they release their handsets on. That's why we're sure it's no co-incidence that Motorola has acquired mobile OS makers Azingo.

In a recent earnings call, Jha said: "I've always felt that owning your OS is important, provided you have an ecosystem, you have all the services and you have an ability and the scale to execute on keeping that OS at the leading edge. And I continue to believe that at some point, if we have all of those attributes, that owning our own OS will be a very important thing".

Azingo Mobile is based on Linux, and includes a webkit browser, web runtime, full development tools, and - notably - support for Adobe Flash. It's not clear whether Motorola will use it to replace its own MotoBlur OS and Android skin, or merely use Azingo's expertise to augment it - but judging by the quote above, we suspect the former.
