Symbian rolls out development tools

Create an app like you'd create a website

Open-source smartphone OS Symbian has rolled out a set of development tools that the company claims allows anyone who can code a website to build a mobile application for the platform.

You can use standards like HTML, CSS and JavaScript to make the app, with a few extra JavaScript APIs allowing access to the phone's innards - the contacts, camera, accelerometers and location sensors. You can make apps in any web development software, but Symbian's also providing its own tools to help you get going.

Lee Williams, one of Symbian's directors, told Pocket-lint: "These Symbian web application development tools provide an ideal entry point for web developers targeting the vast, new development opportunities offered by the Symbian^3 platform and the wider mobile marketplace, where compelling applications are proving their ability to fuel communities".
