TV production increased: recession waning?

Electronics firm Sharp is to double its TV production capacity at its LCD manufacturing plant in Sakai City, Osaka from July this year. It's a move that hints at an upturn in the Japanese economy, and reflects growing consumer confidence in home entertainment globally.

According to Home Cinema Choice magazine, new data on the Japanese market shows that annual TV shipments have swelled to a staggering 2.21 million units, equating to a 120% rise year-on-year.

Naturally, the upcoming World Cup may help shift more TVs this year than last, but the sign of one of the biggest manufacturers now investing in production is hugely positive - it's been a long time coming.

Also, according to Akihabara News, the company is launching a range of LED TVs with integrated Blu-ray recorders in Japan. The AQUOS DX3 series is a range of LED backlit screens sold with a Blu-ray burner and player. They come in sizes from 26 to 52 inches and will be available from 20 May over there. There's currently no indication that they'll make their way to the UK, though. Sob.
