Janis Sharp to run as independent candidate

Hacker's mother to stand against Jack Straw

12 April 2010 16:17 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Pentagon hacker Gary McKinnon's mother, Janis Sharp, has announced that she's going to be standing as an independent candidate in the forthcoming general election, opposing Justice Minister Jack Straw who supported the extradition of her son to the USA.

Straw's constituency is Blackburn, where Straw has a majority of 8,000. Labour has held it since the 50s, and so it's unlikely that Sharp will get elected - it's more of a publicity stunt to draw more attention to her son's plight, though she does claim to have some ties to the Blackburn area herself.

The Free Gary blog says: "The fact that the Gary McKinnon extradition case has exceeded the lifetime of this current Parliament, is a scandal which belies any promises of swift or fair justice, made by this Labour government", and Sharp has explained her policies in depth in an interview with the BBC.
