Apple has just announced that it will be launching a new version of its iPhone OS,version 4.0, this summer for iPhone and iPod touch users around the world, however iPad owners will have to wait until the fall before they get their chance to enjoy the new features, like multitasking.

Apple is staying quiet on why apple iPad users are getting a couple of months snub on the new features, stating nothing more than an expected launch date.

The event on Thursday saw seven major new features added to the iPhone operating system as the company hopes to stay ahead of developments from Google and Microsoft, who are advancing their own mobile operating systems.

New features include multitasking, social gaming, iBooks and a new ad platform as Apple looks to capitalise on the 85 million iPhone and iPod touch devices in use.
