FIFA and Sony to detail 3D World Cup plans

FIFA and Sony are to detail how they will film and let us watch the World Cup in 3D on Thursday.

"The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and its partner Sony Corporation are joining forces to provide football fans around the world with a new viewing experience during the forthcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa", reads the statement issued by both of them.

It will be the first time ever for the FIFA World Cup to be filmed in 3D and hopefully answer what many are calling the "Big Elephant in the room".

Sony has already confirmed that it will be filming all 25 matches in 3D, but as yet failed to confirm how we, the football loving public will be able to watch them.

With 3D TV sets yet to go mainstream in the UK and only a handful of sets from Sony, Panasonic, LG and Samsung available for consumers, the company hasn't announced yet whether they will be only showing those 3D matches in cinemas or offering the footage to broadcasters like Sky.

Pocket-lint will be in attendance on Thursday morning.
