Moto Labs has done a bit of testing in its labs to find out whether a touchscreen is a touchscreen, no matter the manufacturer. Turns out it's not.

The project applied medium pressure in a grid pattern to a series of touchscreens - on the iPhone, HTC Droid Eris, Motorola Droid, Google Nexus One, Palm Pre and BlackBerry Storm 2, then displayed the results. The iPhone came out on top by far, followed up by the Nexus One and HTC Droid Eris.

Interestingly the Motorola Droid performed particularly poorly, but in a subsequent test with lighter pressure came second last to the BlackBerry Storm 2. The iPhone, Nexus One and HTC Droid Eris stayed on top, with the Palm Pre performing a little worse than with medium pressure.

Moto predicts, however, that the low end will catch up fast, saying: "we don’t expect this high degree of touchscreen variation between handset manufacturers to continue in such dramatic form".

"Creating a seamless touchscreen experience is hard work that requires a high level of commitment to technology integration and interdisciplinary teamwork. Over time more brand-name manufacturers will acquire the expertise required to deliver excellent touchscreen products".

Correction: An earlier version of this story suggested that Moto and Motorola were the same company. This is not the case, and we're happy to correct the error.
