Sony has released a new advert professing the capabilities and powers of its new Playstation Move controller, while having a dig at Microsoft's Project Natal at the same time.

The new advert, which carries on in the same fashion as previous PS3 ads already aired, claims that Sony VP Kevin Butler has been to the future (November 2010) and has seen how much fun we are all having playing with Move.

With classic lines like: "Who wants to pretend their hand is a gun", and "It's also got what we in the future like to call buttons, which turn out to be pretty important", it's fighting talk from the games console maker, but fairly true after seeing Jonathan Ross bounce around in front of it earlier in the month.

Which one do you think will be crowned king of the castle and who will be the dirty rascal? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Of course it's gonna be rubbish.

    a) it's Microsoft, and every item of hardware they have ever made is junk
    b) The complexities of recognising hand gestures and body movements is beyond the reach of tech for at least another 10 years. Certainly a console from 2005 won't be able to achieve it.
    c) the lag will make it horrendous.

Anyone with any once of tech knowledge will know this. Realtime capture and processing "minority report" style is simply impossible in current hardware, not even the PS3 would be able to process it realtime, let alone an Xbotch.

  • Let's see ... we can cast the Wii stuff out of the equation altogether. They had the chance to bring on the revolution, and failed, with many hardcore gamers viewing motion control as a gimmick.

Judging by the release games for both of these new controllers (for want of a better term for Natal), that view is justified to an extent. Too many casual games.

I have always believed Sony would come up trumps, simply because:

    i) We have something to manipulate
ii) Sony have always delivered excellent hardware, of a high standard
iii) Microsoft's hardware history isn't that impressive ... Red Ring
iv) Sony's controller will probably be cheaper, though admittedly that is liable to change

But really, success cannot be measured with Natal and Move. From day one they are going to be geared towards the casual market, who aren't likely to own both a PS3 and a 360, which is neccessary in order to compare success. Sales figures are irrelevant, since we don't know which buyers own both systems, are buying them as gifts for other people, trading them in and buying them second-hand, or are buying more than one.

If I had to choose one, however, I would side with Sony's Move.

  • Sony's dildo is rubbish, face it it's a blatant Wii remote copy. Can't you be more original Sony? You've been copying Nintendo controllers since the 90's Posted by ssb, uk
  • That's fantasticly confident of sony and I love them for it. I'm from the UK and always believed the American PS3 "It only does..." campaign is hilarious, unlike our "Start PS3" advertising campaign we've been lumbered with.

Of course Sony is jumping aboard the success of the wii's motion controller, but all three companies tend to copy off each other, though admittedly the Xbox does tend to copy more and innovate less. Lips came from Singstar, Scene It from Buzz, playable avatars from the Wii's Mii's etc, and Project Natal sounds like an advanced creation of the Eyetoy which people got over years ago. With Natal though I'm sure Xbox will be innovating more than most... maybe a game where you could look after a pet, by means of feeding, washing, dressing, and maybe a touch of drawing and gardening to keep up it's creativity levels..? Or maybe a fun exercise simulation! Dont think anything like that has been done before....

  • Here are a few things people may not have thought of.

    1. With Natal you can use props. Playing a game that uses a real, plastic or a bamboo training sword. Playing a golf game..use real golf clubs...etc.

    2. Sure it may not work well for FPS games. Or maybe someone will come out with a one handed controller for moving and a gun. Natal will still track head movement, hand and body movement.

    3. Natal is less of a copy of the itoy than Move is to the Wiimote. Natal has not only a camera but motion sensors, and a mic for voice recognition. While itoy just tracked body movement...and poorly because it was just a camera...Natal tracks joint movement. You punch and Natal will track it.

    4. I think Natal on the Xbox 360 is only a start. I believe Microsoft will bring the technology to the PC/laptops. Instead of using a touch screen you'll use gestures. Natal is going to be a good evolution to gaming and computing.

I'm not saying Move won't do well for the PS3. I'm just saying that Natal I think will do equally as well if not better for the 360 and PC.

  • Admittedly sony is copying the wii mote... but if you couldnt copy other ideas, ideas would never improve, think of it as an improved wii mote, and any way Natal is copying the eyetoy, but as i said before its a highly improved version of it so neither sides can really say its copying so just SHUTUP :)

personally i think Move will be better but only if it brings out some good hardcore game for the controller.
