Avatar becomes fastest selling DVD ever at Play.com

17 March 2010 18:05 GMT / By Ben Crompton

Avatar has beaten off previous efforts from Mamma Mia and The Dark Knight to become Play.com’s biggest selling DVD ever.

We brought you news of the box office spectacular Avatar going on pre-order on the 16 March, since then it has sold five times as many copies as the aforementioned titles Mamma Mia and The Dark Knight.

Interestingly a good deal of the copies pre-ordered within the first 24 hours were Blu-ray, with 43% being sold in the high definition format.

David Rimmer from Play.com states that: “Based on the success of the film at the box office, we expected pre-sales on Play.com to be significant but such a high volume of orders on the first day is outstanding".

Clearly Play.com is happy, but let's hope that the film is equally well received in 2D as opposed to the 3D that we all fell head over heels for at the cinema.
