Sony PS3's Error 8001050F fixed

Consoles thought 2010 was a leap year

As promised, Sony has found a fix for error 8001050F which has been plaguing consoles over the past 48 hours. The problem originated from the fact that some older PS3 consoles contained a bug that caused them to think that 2010 was a leap year - then when the network service tried to tell them it was actually 1 March, not 29 February, they shut down in protest.

But Sony has been able to rectify the problems by, er, waiting for it to not be 29 February any more. The company says: "Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally. If the time displayed on the XMB is still incorrect, users are able to adjust time settings manually or via the internet".

The whole debacle turned into a bit of a PR disaster for the company. There were long hours of no communication from the company, and it'll hurt the PS3's already-fragile reputation. Plus, Xbox 360 fanatics will finally have some ammunition to shoot back with when confronted with Red Ring of Death taunts.
