Supermarket giant gets into video on demand

Walmart buys Vudu

23 February 2010 10:12 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Walmart, the supermarket giant in the US, has jumped into the video on demand service and bought VUDU, the box that lets you get instant access to thousands of movies and TV shows directly through the television; without requiring a computer or cable/satellite TV service.

The move, which would allow Walmart to stay in the home movie market, means that it has protected itself from losing out to company's like NetFlix in the US when people start to "migrate to a digital environment", says Eduardo Castro-Wright, vice chairman for Walmart.

VUDU has licensing agreements with almost every major movie studio and dozens of independent and international distributors to offer approximately 16,000 movies instantly at the press of a button.

Currently only available in the US, the news could mean that the device could be coming to the UK via ASDA, which is wholly owned by Walmart.
