CompactFlash roadmap reveals 144 petabyte memory cards

If you thought the newly announced 64GB SD card was more than enough memory, the association behind the CompactFlash memory card format used in high-end digital SLR cameras has confirmed a roadmap for cards up to 144 petabytes in storage size.

A petabyte (PB) is the next size up from terabytes, which is the next step up from gigabytes, which is the next step up from megabytes and in short means more memory than you could possible visualise using at the moment. 1 petabyte equals 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes or 1000 terabytes for example.

The new specification also improves the transfer speed from device to card.

No word, however, when we are likely to see petabyte cards on the market, but with that much storage expect them to be expensive.
