A new network speed test has shown that Vodafone is the fastest operator in the UK for accessing the web, while O2 wins for music downloads.

The new series of tests carried out by SIRODA, a company that test radio frequencies and capabilities, measured five UK operators in a 60 day period across 150 UK locations.

The tests measured mobile data connection speed at peak periods throughout the day to see which operator; Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange, O2 and 3 performed the best.

The tests show that in January 2010, Vodafone achieved the fastest web access speed outside London, however within London and O2 offered the fastest average web page access experience at 1.7 seconds, over 30% quicker than the slowest operator.

When it comes to downloading a MP3 file according to the data O2 is the fastest. It, says SIRODA, was the best in 12 out of 20 UK key cities and was second place in a further four more.

The news mirrors Pocket-lint's own tests at the beginning of the year where it found that O2 was the best operator for the iPhone in London at five locations around the city.

Data performance was measured by testing the time to access a webpage and the speed of downloading a typical music file. Tests were conducted between 10am and 10pm Monday to Sunday, replicating genuine user patterns. Cities covered included London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield.

The survey methodology, commissioned by O2, was independently verified by BABT (British Approvals Board for Telecommunications). BABT also verified the results of the tests.
