Notion Ink's Adam tablet appears

Remember the curious-looking Notion Ink "Smartpad" which surfaced in mid-December? The one with the Pixel Qi transflective display that works as both an LCD and an E-Ink panel, depending on the amount of sunlight hitting it. Well, following Mobile World Congress a huge amount of information about the device has appeared. We have a full list of specs, some juicy renders, pricing, a release date, and it has a better name now too. You can call it Adam.

Specs-wise, the front consists of the aforementioned 10-inch Pixel Qi transflective display, running at 1024 x 768. It seems like it comes in Android, Ubuntu and Chrome OS flavours, and is powered by the Nvidia Tegra 2 chip, which runs at 1GHz and acts as both a CPU and graphics card in one. On the software front, you'll use Firefox or Chrome to browse the Web, both of which support Adobe Flash. Notion Ink seems at great pains to point out that you can multitask on it too.

It has HDMI-out and 3 USB ports, and can output video at 1080p resolution. There's a 3-megapixel autofocusing camera and Notion Ink reckons it'll squeeze 16 hours of juice out of its battery. In direct sunlight, with the backlight off, it should shoot up to 160 hours. There's Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, a pile of sensors and accelerometers, GPS and an SD Card slot.

The company reckons it can get the device down to less than 1kg and a thickness of 14mm, and it'll be priced starting at $327 and going up to $800, depending on several factors. For the specs above, expect to be paying nearer the upper end of that range. It's due in early summer, so perhaps you'll be taking one on a picnic with you before August. We'll keep you posted.
