Average social gamer is 43-year-old woman

PopCap, maker of such games as the popular Bejeweled, has revealed a profile of the average social gamer from a recent survey carried out in the UK and the US.

The "social gamers" survey covered consumers who play games on social networking platforms such as Facebook and MySpace with an estimated total social gamer population of approximately 100 million people in the United Kingdom and America, although the survey itself canvassed 1202 such people.

While 24% of internet users say they play social games regularly, it turns out that the typical social gamer - according to PopCap's research - is female and 43-years-old.

58% of all social gamers are female with just 6% of all social gamers aged 21 or younger, something PopCap suggests is an interesting market sector representing "a huge opportunity to reach hundreds of millions of consumers who historically do not play video games".
