Qualcomm promises 3G cars from Audi
MWC 2010: Connected cars due later this year
15 February 2010 17:04 GMT / By Duncan Geere
Chip-maker Qualcomm has revealed that it'll soon be outfitting Audi cars with 3G. The announcement was made at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and will introduce a new mobile media interface to cars, along with a navigation system based on Google Earth.
It'll be arriving on the newest generations of the Audi A8, and has also been demonstrated in an Audi A5 Cabriolet. Handily, the 3G chip will also let the car act as a Wi-Fi hotspot - allowing passengers with laptops to get online, albeit depending on 3G reception in the area.
Audi's director of development in wireless, acoustic and connectivity, Peter Kohlschmidt, said: "Audi strives to deliver a cutting-edge automotive experience, and increasingly that has meant not only the best-in-class automotive technology, but also complementary capabilities that bring greater value to our customers".
The cars will be rolling out onto the streets later this year.
