Google Maps gets Labs section

Enable experimental features

The "Labs" functionality on Gmail and Google Calendar is well-liked by its users - allowing them to customise their experience by turning off and on small single-use plugins that can still be rather powerful. Now the functionality has been rolled out to Google Maps, too.

A selection of nine different tools are available - including an option to draw a box to zoom in, the addition of rotatable aerial imagery, a game that challenges you to name countries, a tooltip that displays latitude and longitude and - like in Gmail - the ability to add the "beta" tag back to the logo.

To access the functionality, head on over to maps.google.com and click the green flash in the top bar. Then you can enable the features you want, and disable those that you don't want. We rather like the guess-the-country game - what's your favourite of the lab features?
