The president of telecoms giant, Telefónica - which owns O2 in the UK - has said in a news conference that he intends to start charging companies like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft for the ability to use its networks.

"Internet search engines use our Net without paying anything at all, which is good for them but bad for us. It’s obvious that this situation must change, our strategy is to change this", said César Alierta in Bilbao.

That could mean search engines being blocked on Telefónica's network until the big tech giants pony up their cash to get their websites available again. However, we'd be surprised if the backlash from Telefónica's customers isn't swift and brutal.
