Play.com appears to have put up a page on its website for an unlocked, SIM-free version of Google's Android-powered Nexus One handset. The retailer is confidently stating that it's due for release on 16 February.

As previously reported, the Nexus One has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm, a 3.7-inch OLED display, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, a 5-megapixel camera, compass, GPS, Stereo Bluetooth, headphone jack, 4GB microSD card and trackball.

The handset has been available unlocked from Google USA for a little while for $529, which is about £340 at current exchange rates. Shipping to Britain is $30, and Google will supply a UK adaptor for an extra $20. Even then, that totals $580 - just £370. (Update - some people have added that it's more like £450 when you take into account import duty).

Play.com, on the other hand, is charging a whopping £600 for the handset. We've sent them an email asking how they can justify the difference. In the meantime, if you want one, we'd suggest either buying direct from Google or holding tight to see what Vodafone's contracts will be like. That info is due any time now, so we'll let you know as soon as we hear.
