New Canon camera to be launched on 8 February

4 February 2010 11:27 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Canon could possibly launch a new camera or camcorder on Monday, Pocket-lint has learnt.

The camera company is holding an event at the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards in London on the 8 February titled "Canon at the movies".

The timing coincides with a plethora of announcements from other camera makers like Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Fujifilm, but also corresponds with rumours circling photo sites that the Japanese company could be about to launch the Canon Rebel T2i in the US and/or Canon 60D cameras.

According to rumours (via Canonrumours), the T2i spec list includes a new LCD, selectable fps settings in video mode, and a new build quality and shape for the Rebel range.

Meanwhile, a forum post on DPreview suggests an 18-megapixel 60D is on the cards. Its supposed spec sheet features 6.3fps, DIGIC IV processor and 24p/30p HD video recording modes (it lists 36fps, we are assuming a typo).

Canon declined to comment on the rumours when we phoned, however, did say that all its recent product launches would be on hand for us to play with.

So, what would you like to see from Canon with this new launch? Are they on the right track with the new wave of movie-based DSLR models? Are you hoping for a Micro Four Thirds challenger? Could we see a DSLR that fully integrates the company's camcorder line? Have your say in the comments box below and we'll reveal all on the 8th.

  • thanks chaps - looks like you got to it before our sub did. Should be all fixed now Posted by stuartmiles, United Kingdom
  • Never mind the typos, I want to know what they are launching - a follow on to the 500D would be nice - with decent video and mic support. Posted by Justin, Uk
  • Justin, the 500D already offers Full HD (1080p) recording Posted by stuartmiles, United Kingdom
  • Let's hope it will have a swivel screen. Posted by Campsos Shoes, http://epsos.de
  • I think it will be a general strengthening of the movie modes in their DSLR models, offering greater creative control and options. I'm not really interested in straight megapixel bumps, but I think there will be movement in the low light shooting capabilities too. I think the 60D looks like a safe bet, perhaps a 550D for the Europeans. Swivel screens would be nice, I'd like to be able to fold mine away to stop it getting scratched! • I hope they stop the MP race, i would like a 13MP with better high iso & low light results. I also hope it will be a 60D, and not only a T2i(550/600D).
A 60D at 900€ would be great, with Full HD 24p movies and a decent sensor ( not the 7D's, i really don't like the first HW NR, that you can't disable, to have decent photos)

  • Does the 500D have a microphone jack? I'd agree with Justin if not. The video side of these things is beautiful and, what with the lens quality, there's so much more potential than filmmaking on a camcorder. All they need is a proper sound input. I suppose a nice carry case would be good too. Posted by Dan Sung, United Kingdom
  • I can skip the video stuff, give me 5 shot AEB, faster more accurate focusing and less noise in the high ISO's Posted by Bill, USA
  • Do we know when the 60D will be available to buy? And how long we should wait before the price comes down? Posted by Shehzad Charania, UK
  • For those who go to the event this is a GREAT opportunity to ask for the Canon 5D Mark II Firmware Updates!

And also ask for FILMMAKING FEATURES like these ones (that are completely possible):

You can take a printed list and give to the representatives.

You can also give them a link to that blog and to the Online Petition to Canon Inc., which has more than 2,880 signatures:

This is CLEARLY an event aimed to Movie/Cinematography, so don’t hesitate!

It is a GREAT chance, don't miss it!

  • Hopefully the launch of a new camera by Canon will lead to the price of existing entry models to drop allowing more to enjoy the benefits of DSLR photography. Posted by Aaron Powis, UK
  • I wish I was more thrilled about the upcoming Rebel. However, until Canon decides to put full frame sensors in all their DSLR, I won't even look at a Canon. The Canon 7D is joke because it is loaded with so many mega pixels that the noise is un-bearable, especially at 1600 ISO and above. The 50D was also the way; why have more mega pixels if they make the picture look a mosaic made from sand? Also, Canon seems to love putting more buttons on every new camera. More buttons does not translate into better pictures.

The video mode is also laughable at best. An H2.64 QuickTime codec? Really? If anything Canon should be able to implement a better codec that doesn't have so much compression and allows for better color space. Heck, even Red One Cameras have developed a codec that can use compact flash for 3k at 120fps. If we are supposed to believe the Rebel or any other DSLR can be used for Cinematography purposes, then it better include a codec that achieves professional results.

Lastly, I wish Canon would spend more time re-developing some of their lenses that have been on the market for over a decade. Many of L series telephoto lenses could benefit from better algorithms to increase AF.

  • A 7D with full frame would be ok.
For my personal needs a can join Bill: stop investing in video functions, but concentrate on low noise at high ISO and fast and accurate focussing. The built in flash master should be standard starting at 1000D - the ST-E2 stuff is ridiculous! The E-TTL stuff needs a heavy boost anyway when one compares it against CLS from Nikon.
(My 5dmkii is not a bad camera, but I am so disappointed that I am somewhat tied into the Canon world these days, when they mainly invest in video and MP's)

  • Perhaps a 60D will appear in time for Christmas... Posted by chrishall, United Kingdom
