Virgin Media has announced that Eurosport HD will be available to its 3.7 million TV customers. Free to those on Virgin's "XL" TV package, Eurosport HD brings Virgin Media's HD channels to eight.

The addition of Eurosport HD signals the "first of several new HD channels due to launch on Virgin Media over the coming months", says the broadcaster, as it tries to rival Sky and Freesat's HD offerings.

Due in April, Eurosport HD is a simulcast version of Eurosport and will offer high def footage from the likes of the forthcoming Tour de France, French Open tennis, all European rounds of World Superbikes, the World Touring Car Championships and Athletics European Championships as well as selected tournaments from the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and wintersports.

Meanwhile PictureBox, Virgin's video on demand service will premiere the HD version of Steven Soderbergh's "Che" on UK television when it airs the two part Che Guevara biopic, exclusively on Virgin Media.

Part one will launch on 5 February, and part two, Guerrilla will follow a month later (!) on 5 March.
