A new games console that will emulate the Wii as well as allowing you to play classic Sega games is being launched in the summer.

The console, called the Sega Zone, will come with 20 classic Sega titles, like Alex Kid, Golden Axe, Sonic and Knuckles and Ecco the dolphin as well as a further 30 games, 16 of which are motion controlled.

Users will be able to control the action via two included wireless remote controls and when not playing Sega titles be able to play the usual array of sports classics like table tennis, darts, fencing, beach volleyball, and golf by waving the controller in front of the screen as they do with the Nintendo console.

However, gamers hoping to be able to load in more games will be disappointed, although the makers say that they hope to offer more Sega titles in the future, you won't be able to add them to this system.

Priced at around £50, the Sega Zone is expected to be out in the summer.

The Sega Zone follows the launch of a revamped Sega Mega Drive console launched in April 2009.

The console, which is smaller than the original comes preloaded with 15 Sega licensed games, many of which are also featured on the Sega Zone.

It is, however, able to take old cartridges and is priced at £39.95.

  • I really like the look of this sega console and at around £50 my young nieces
and nephews would probably enjoy playing those games mentioned from
    Sega.

  • The idea that I would not be able to load additional softwares onto the unit seems a waste.
Frankly, I refuse to support this system because it's obvious they're trying to get my money, only to release another 'console' with another twenty or so titles.

Go to hell, Sega. Most of your titles are already on the Wii anyhow. Too little, too late.

  • I don't understand the bulk of the article makes it sound like you can't use old Sega games. Then at the end you say "It is, however, able to take old cartridges and is priced at £39.95." which sounds like you can.

    Which is it?
    Posted by Justin, USA
  • the £39.95 refers to a console already on the market and not the one in the pictures. Sorry if that confuses. We wanted to point out that this isn't the first device of its kind out there. Posted by stuartmiles, United Kingdom
  • What is the point of this? Sega wheel the same old titles out each year already. They're available in abundance on Wii, PS3 and 360, as both games (Genesis Collection etc) and downloads. The market does NOT need an entire new console to play them, no matter how shiny and sleek it appears. Posted by A Davies, United Kingdom
  • @A Davies if you don't need this new console good for your, but the other people of the world maybe would wanted pay 50-60€ and not 300 to play this games.
You haven't obligation to buy, but don't tell Sega if can or no sold their games and how to do.

Thanks for information and sorry if I have some spelling. I started to learn english with internet and dictionary.

  • @Dooley

Could you please tell me, which videogames company will produce something for charity?
    Posted by silverf0x0, Italy
  • @Calcuin Youre neglecting to mention that this is a retro package the demographic this will appeal to would be old hardcore crowd who will more than likely own many of the other systems that the sega collection is already on. PSP, PS2, Wii virtual console. Also it would probably be cheaper for them just to release those games as downloadable titles on PSN Xbox Live or maybe pushing it as a disc on the Wii which would sort of be unnecessary. • You morons just talk because you already have a Ps3 or a Wii... Do you know how much a Ps3 cost in india or brazil, morons?
And for your info, the sega genesis (megadrive) never ceased to be sold in Brazil. As a matter of fact, this model is sold for about $160 reais (like US$80)...

A PS3 cost $1000 or even more. But no, you didnt know that because y'all are too lazy, you have your ass sit all day and you eat and eat like pigs...

gimme a break, bunch of losers... no wonder why you decided a war against a country you dont even can point in a map.
    Posted by Frankie, Italy
  • you can play old mega carts on it, they just can't add new titles to the harddrive.

And it will be £39.99 in the uk.

  • FORZA FRANKIE! Posted by Neville, UK
  • arent all those games available on the virtual console?
ppl are going to be pissed when they realized they paid about 200 dollars for a package they couldve paid 50 for.
nintendo is banking off nickel and diming us.

on the plus side, at least it has more good games than the ps3...

  • This is stupid=\ I will not buy it, and i not take it even if it was "for free". Posted by minum, The Void
  • well i see what sega is doing here... they're releasing a cheaper way to get their games, the price of a ps3, wii, xbox 360, they cost alot, where this is only $40. the only thing i don't understand is, look at the controller there's 4 buttons... sega genesis only had 3 buttons or 6 never 4... just something i thought i'd bring up but it's an otherwise decent console from my point of view can't wait for it to come out in america. • Don't buy this crap. It's a cheap rip-off.

    http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?p=3076714

For their other product (The Zone 40) they stole art assets from other games.

    http://www.product-reviews.net/2009/08/09/zone-40-wireless-gaming-alternative-to-nintendo-wii/

The Zone 40 also has Sonic etc on it.

THIS IS NOT MADE BY SEGA.

  • Do some research before posting any old crap you read on some other site if you want to be taken seriously as a news site. Posted by Mr Munro, Scotland
  • Of course it's a ripoff. In my time, I've wound up playing many ripoff games that were sold on a Microsoft collections CD several years back. For example, Bustout!, which was one of my favourites, is a complete rip of 'Breakout!'. They're not going to get sued if they aren't exact, though, so they can pretty much get away with it. It's just the way it happens. They won't be successful, but they'll still reach people.

This may be garbage to some people, but a godsend to people who can't afford a Wii, Internet etc. It's economising to the max so that people can enjoy the experience of gaming, if they haven't already or haven't had the chance. Also the backwards compatibility feature of the cartridges should allow for people to nab cheap cartridges from car boot sales etc. and play them on a new, non-aged console.

  • It sound interesting ~ When will this Sega sell in Hong Kong???? Posted by Grace Wong, Hong Kong
  • I think its a great Idea!! I just wish that you could put more games in later. Or maybe make new game cartriges. I would have no problem playing old school style games that support a motion controller. If done right they could grab hold of a nitch market. If it becomes available in the US I plan to buy it! Posted by Sir Gimpalot, USA
  • hmm, new console hu? just a machine wich plays old games... games that i all ready have on my real megadrive, haha
but hee, this keeps the megadrive memories alive! ;)

  • I hipe this is more of a prototype and that its final release version is like the wii but more powerfull and can play this generation of games only time can tell. Posted by Mitchell, Australia
  • Will it be released in the US of summer 2010? I think its already in the UK. Like any other sega fan ill go out and buy it but will it be released in the US in summer of 2010? Posted by Mike, Romania
  • Frankie needs a attitude adjustment. Posted by I hate flammers, moh, moh
  • Do not buy this. This is nothing more than a glorified emulator. And I guarantee you, Sega has nothing to do with this thing. They do however have what's known as the Sega Genesis Firecore system. It, like this is basically an emulator with only 20 built in games, but this has a cartridge slot. It's compatible with all controllers for Genesis, the 32X attachment, and the Sega CD attachment. There's also a handheld version. Please. I beg of you, do not buy this, it's not worth it. It's a black Zone 40, a crappy Wii-like console that comes with rip offs of games like Golden Axe and Zuma, they're even called Golden Axe and Zuma, but they have almost 8-bit graphics. Posted by A very concerned person, and Lover of video games, I know my stuff., USA
  • I don't get it. Well, maybe I do. No way they'd be able to include Nintendo games or whatever (maybe because that company's still in hardware). But they could include Turbografx-16 games perhaps. Who're they foolin'?

Franky's post is just too funny. It's good to know that fact, but he must be convinced he's immortal, or that life's not so short. Such ironic ignorance.
    Posted by JonP, UK
  • i really want to buy one, but man... sega don't wan't people have more games in the console than what they just give, i wonder why.....

and that's the only thing make me think twice to buy it :(
    Posted by hasan, Indonesia
  • Wait, by Emulates, do you mean it plays Wii Games? Posted by DarkSEGALord, UK
  • ...This is a LICENCED Sega console... not a Sega DESIGNED console

The title and lack of ^ that explanation is VERY misleading.

In summery, don't blame SEGA for a console they have nothing to do with... this is third-party bullshit plain and simple.
    Posted by Ry Spears, Australia
  • Silly Sega, to get the consumers attention today ( gore-loving kids) you need a game that will attract their attention. I feel like the console is cheap as hell! if its only friggin $50, but you will reel in lots of customers with that kind-off a price. a ps3 controller is as much as that! anyways, you should change your old mascot.
    PS3- Kratos (god of war)
XBOX360- Master Cheif ( halo series)
    WII- Mario (sucks ass)

  • ok that looks like the ZONE40 Wii spin-off with a picture of sonic and a sega logo. If SEGA returns to the console market, i'd think that they would come in with something cutting-edge, like with their previous consoles.

  • Game Vendors scramble to purchase 3DConsole.com
    ...............................................
A record-breaking domain sale is expected to lift suppressed dot com prices as major game vendors scramble to purchase 3DConsole.com prior to the launch of the worlds first 3D console by Nintendo in June of this year.

The auction is currently running at Sedo.com and industry experts are suggesting a 5 to 6 figure sale, which would be a very welcomed boost to this one time booming industry.

  • Why Does Sega even bother coming out to emulate the Nintendo which it won't compete against. You had your time when you were head of the game but then you gave it up. Their Portable gaming soared miles ahead of GameBoy. I think it's too little too late just to offer a throwback for sentimental types Posted by John, USA

But I was waiting for a supernew console that could be a way ahead xbox 360 or playstation 3... After all it's from SEGA tthat we are talking about somthing like "SEGA AMDOOVIDIA" a console that could be build by associantion of nvidia amd Google to rivalize sony and microsoft
