Ultra-compact surround sound system

Boston Acoustics launches SoundWare XS 5.1

28 January 2010 10:45 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Boston Acoustics has announced a set of ultra-compact surround sound home theatre speakers called the SoundWare XS 5.1.

They're a little unusual-looking - shaped like a polyhedron. Boston Acoustics says that this is to clean up the sound by reducing standing waves. Each polyhedron contains a 2.5-inch woofer and a 0.5-inch tweeter, and feature a mounting bracket and weatherproof build.

The subwoofer has a 100W amp and an 8-inch graphite injected polymer woofer with an acoustically tuned port. Boston Acoustics is also claiming it has something called Deep Channel Design - designing the magnetics of the motor structure to get the greatest woofer stroke. The company reckons that'll deliver more bass from less power.

The whole pack costs £400 and is available from your favourite hi-fi retailer right now.
