iPhone cracker turns attention to gaming

George Hotz, the 17-year-old whizkid who unlocked the iPhone in 2007, is now 20 and has turned his attention to the supposedly-unhackable Sony PS3. He claims to have developed a technique that could allow anyone to run pirated games or "homebrew" software on the console.

There's a thriving Wii homebrew scene, and a decent Xbox 360 one, but the Playstation 3 has never been hacked before. "It's time for that to change." said Hotz on his blog back in December. He's been working on the hack for 5 weeks, and has now managed to read and write memory to the real space of the device, meaning he can tell it what to do.

Hotz says: "The PS3 is a prime example of how security should be done, very open docs wise, and the thing even runs Linux. But it isn't unbreakable". However, he distanced himself from piracy, adding: "We do not condone piracy, nor will we ever". Sony told the BBC that it's looking into the reports and would "clarify the situation" when it has more information.
