Twitter Trends going local

What's happening near me rather than on the other side of the world

Twitter Trends going local

Twitter has started to roll out localised "Trends" based on where people are tweeting.

"really glad to see Local Trends starting to roll out to small percentage of users", tweeted Twitter's head of platform, Ryan Sarver, on Friday.

The news means that rather than global Trends, twitter users will be able to see Trends that are more relevant to their location like a concert.

Although currently only available to a handful of Twitter users, screenshots circulating the Web, thanks to Lisa Barone show Trending topics isolated to cities and countries with the UK getting a billing.

" .@erickschonfeld "Coachella" is trending in LA and SF, but not globally http://bit.ly/5r5A4l", Sarver told Techcrunch reporter Erick Schonfeld via the micro-blogging service before later saying "it's coolest when you have really localized events like Fleet Week".

The new feature, which takes advantage of the geo-location feature introduced in 2009 is expected to start making its way out to all users from next week.
