New Nokia phone to be launched on 26 January

21 January 2010 12:01 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Pocket-lint can reveal that Nokia is to unveil a new mobile phone on Tuesday 26 January - just a day ahead of Apple's media event which promises a tablet device and possible iPhone news.

The launch has been confirmed to Pocket-lint by Nokia's UK boss Mark Loughran at the press event that saw the announcement of free Ovi Maps navigation for Nokia smartphones.

Although we can reveal news of the launch, Nokia's public relations staff stepped in to stop Loughran from unveiling any more details about the new phone.

So, what would you like to see from Nokia with this new launch? Are the Finns on the right track with the new wave of touchscreen devices? Do music-focused phones appeal? Could we see a special GPS edition considering the recent Ovi news? Have your say in the comments box below and we'll reveal all on the 26th.

UPDATE: It's a 16GB (i.e., smaller) version of the X6.

  • I think they need a decent consumer-focused touchscreen phone that can compete against the likes to the HTC Hero, iPhone, etc. It needs to do everything, have easy access to the Ovi infrastructure in an intuitive and integrated way and offer a decent capacitive screen and so on. The N97 was ill received and the N900 isn't really consumer ready. Perhaps a step away from the reliance on keyboards and skinny touch hybrids is due? Posted by chrishall, United Kingdom
  • My sensible money would be on some kind of GPS edition model following the free Ovi Maps news - Nokia has launched a Navigation Edition 5800 in the States.
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/30093/nokia-5800-navigation-edition-america. I'd love to see something wow-factor from the Finns especially a day ahead of the Apple launch, but I can't see it. Maybe Nokia will surprise me...

  • Nokia really needs to revamp Symbian properly to suit touchscreens before it'll have any success in that market. Until then, it should make the most of its reputation for reliability and launch a rugged, GPS-equipped, "explorer" phone with a host of apps for climbing, canoeing, hiking, etc.

But I reckon it'll be another godawful, slow, "Comes With Music", touchscreen handset instead.

  • I agree with radioedit's comment. There is a market for a rugged, GPS-equipped, "explorer" phone with a host of apps for climbing, canoeing, hiking, etc that the iPhone, HTC, Nexus haven't been able to fill yet. I've gone off Nokia in recent years as they are far behind in the touchscreen market but might be swayed back if they can produce something that will differentiate themselves from the competition. • Sorry to be a bit damp squibby about this but if it was something good, wouldn't we have been hearing about it since November via the medium of decreasingly out of focus photos?

The rugged device would make sense as I suppose it's niche enough not to have attracted so much attention. It could be something painfully green. How about something aimed at cyclists?. They done cars after all. It's that or pogo sticks. Come to think of it, it could be a GPS-centric device just plain aimed at pedestrians.

  • Yeh, rugged phone would be just the ticket as Nokia don't appear to be in a position to compete directly with the top-end smartphones. Posted by art, uk
  • What I want from Nokia is

    Flick/kinetic scrolling on all menus/contacts
The ability to put widgets/programs on the homescreen
    3.7 candybar touchscreen,
    NO physical keyboard
    at least 6 megapixel
    Xenon Flash
    720p video recording

  • I think it will be the rumored N87! 12.1 MP camera, 2 MP camera in front, 3.9 capacitive toucscree, xenon flash.... The N87 been on the news for quit sometime now! Posted by wally, USA
  • Tell me you all know the N87 was fake right? There was a huge amount of spelling mistakes in the document, and bad grammar to boot. Not to mention it contained some odd language for a technical document. Posted by Bart, UK
