63% primary school kids toting mobile phones

63% of under 10-year-olds in the UK own a mobile phone, suggests research from PrezzyBox.com. The research took the form of a recent poll put to just under 1400 parents with children under 10.

As well as the high number of kids toting portable telephones, the poll also revealed that three quarters of kids in the age group own a PC or a laptop.

It seems the phone ownership came about in just over of the half cases due to constant pressure (read: whining) from the child while some agreed to the option for safety's sake. Although so many pre-teens have a direct line, 54% of parents said they didn't monitor usage in any way.

Other gadgets in the average under 10-year-olds' arensal include a handheld games console (62%), MP3 players (46%) and digital cameras (44%).
