There's never been much love lost between Apple and Microsoft. The two companies duked it out for much of the 90s and 00s, but appear to be finally finding some common ground against a new enemy - Google.

With Google competing with Microsoft on the software front and Apple in the mobile space, Bloomberg is reporting that the two companies are having a chat about potentially making Microsoft's Bing search engine the default on the iPhone, shutting Google's search engine out of the equation.

Neither company was prepared to comment on the rumours, but such a tie-up would bringa tremendous boost to Microsoft's search engine and more strategic benefits to Apple. Google would likely still be available through the settings menus, but the default would be Bing.

Microsoft's rebranding of its search business from Windows Live Search to Bing in 2009 has been seen as a success by most analysts, despite Google retaining a strong lead in the market. As all three companies diversify their offerings, it'll be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few years.
