YouTube to stream live sports coverage

First up - cricket

19 January 2010 15:39 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

It seems the 10-million-strong audience success of the live stream of a recent U2 concert has turned Google's head towards the possibility of offering live broadcasts. While the U2 gig was a one-off, it's been revealed there are plans in the works for YouTube to begin streaming live sports events.

Cricket is first up with the news that Google has agreed terms with the Indian Premier League to show 60 matches over the next season. Some of the matches, due to kick off (bat off, maybe?) in March will feature England players Graeme Swann and Jonathan Trott.

Bruce Daisley, a Google exec for YouTube and display, is quoted as saying: "We're keen to see how the community will take to live sport. There's a real interest in live events, so we're excited". Google is said to be currently seeking global sponsor and local backers to try and monetise the broadcasts.
