Google is reportedly conducting an internal investigation into whether one or more of its employees aided Chinese hackers in breaking into the email accounts of dissidents in the much-reported "Operation Aurora" hack on its Gmail service.

Reuters is claiming that it has two sources who claim that the attack was facilitated by people working in Google China's office, however Google is saying "We're not commenting on rumor and speculation. This is an ongoing investigation, and we simply cannot comment on the details". There are currently no staff in the office - they've either been put on holiday leave or transferred  to other offices in the region.

China has played down the significance of Google's re-evaluation of its presence in the country, but its government has received a diplomatic note from Washington formally requesting that the attack be explained. Google, for its part, has said that it'll be having talks with relevant officials in the coming days, so stay tuned for more developments on this story.
