Bing gets URL shortener too

Bit.ly-powered service available internally at Microsoft

The popularity of micro-blogging site Twitter, which as most of you will know, limits posts to 140 characters, is continuing to drive sites to offer short form URLs.

The latest to do so may well be Microsoft's bing search engine, which follows news from Facebook with http://fb.me, Google with http://goo.gl and YouTube with http://youtu.be.

However, the bing URL shortener is currently only available to Microsoft employees. Powered by URL shortening service bit.ly and currently offering links starting http://binged.it, it's actually longer that bing's URL, but obviously not longer than links to specific pages from bing.

"Currently in partnership with Bit.ly, we are using a URL shortener called Binged.it, available to the internal Microsoft network at this time", a spokesperson told the Seatle PI blog.

And, it seems there are no immediate plans to roll it out to the general public - "We have nothing additional to share at this time" - but we will keep you posted.
