Internet tablets are the hot gadget right now. With rumours circulating since this time last year that Apple was prepping the iSlate, it was always going to be CES 2010 or bust for any other manufacturer trying to get in on the action.

What was most interesting was the blurring of the line with other gadget genres such as with the 4.8-inch LG GW990. Is it a big phone or does that Intel Moorestown chip make it a computer?

What about the enTourage eDGe? Giant dual screened ebook reader or does the Android side turn it into a tablet? And, of course, there's always the more old-school approach to this new school genre as taken by the HPTouchSmart tm2. Who says a tablet PC can't actually be a fully-fledged laptop too?

Definitions aside though, these are the ones that caught our attention...

Star of the Show: Dell Mini 5

It was a close call but Dell managed to reveal just enough about this upcoming phone-come-internet device to let us know that it's going to be a winner. The Dell Mini 5 combines stylish good looks with the Android OS and full multitouch display to give a gadget that people are going to be holding out for. With a SIM slot, Wi-Fi and 3G as well, it's going to be interesting to see if Apple can top this one with more than just the Jonathon Ive design.

Future Flier: Lenovo Slate

Really nice idea here and it could well be something we see in all laptops in years to come. The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid - as it's properly known - is a notebook running Windows 7 on an Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM and 16GB of NAND flash with a detachable screen - allowing it to be used as a tablet on Qualcomm's Snapdragon on a Custom Lenovo OS. Very neat indeed.

Top of the Flops: HP Slate

Anyone could have shot a 17 second video of the corner of a satnav and stood on stage to say they've just invented the world's best internet tablet. Does this thing even exist? We hear it might be 7 inches or 10 inches or it might be that the person playing with it in the footage has really big hands and actually it's 15 inches. Who knows? Nobody, because HP is expecting us to get all hot without telling us a thing. Not this time buddy.

The Best of the Rest

The ICD
It's not the prettiest tablet on the block, but what ICD and T-Mobile have come up with is a juicy graphical prospect. Their 15- and, more pertinently, 7-inch devices include the Nvidia Tegra platform to run a 1080p display. It also happens to be an Android OS device.

MSI Dual Screen
There were actually two that MSI showed off, but either one would do nicely for us thanks. These Intel Menlow-powered machines run Windows 7 on two 10-inch touchscreens with a virtual keyboard and ebook reader too. All storage is on the SSD and MSI will choose to bring the machine out if this concept proves popular enough. Expect to shell out big time for it though.
