Music downloads surge with new iTunes update

Following Apple's upgrade of its iTunes software last week, Apple has announced today that the new software has increased the number of music files downloads for the American service. According to the Technology company: 3.3million songs had been downloaded and 20,000 people had published custom playlists in the last week.

The playlists, a new feature in iTunes 4.5, allows people to publish a list of their favourite tracks then have other users of the music download service rate the listing. In addition to the 3.3 million songs downloaded, version 4.5 had also seen a huge 3million downloads.

It was not all good news however for Apple. The company had originally predicted to sell 100 million songs in its first year. Last week Apple announced results suggesting that number was actually only 70 million, 30% below the predicted target.
