Ebook readers just got a whole lot bigger thanks to a new device announced on the eve of this year's CES in Las Vegas.

The Skiff Reader will be, according to its makers, the first ebook reader optimised for newspaper and magazine content and feature the largest and highest resolution electronic-paper display yet unveiled in a consumer device.

How large is large? 11.5-inches it seems.

Tech-spec wise, the reader will come with a resolution of 1200 x 1600 pixels, feature 4GB of memory, SDHC card slot, speaker, 3.5mm headphones jack, a full touchscreen display and connectivity via 3G in the US with Sprint rather than AT&T. It will also come with Wi-Fi for connectivity at home.

"It is the first consumer product to feature the next-generation of e-paper display – one based on a thin, flexible sheet of stainless-steel foil", reads the press release from the company.

The move means the new device will be considerably more durable than the Amazon and Sony offerings that use glass screens to protect the display, however it is not yet certain how this will effect the screen quality.

Following in the footsteps of Amazon and the Barnes & Noble Nook, the e-reader will come with a digital store to buy books wirelessly as well as, more importantly - in order to benefit from the large screen - content from newspapers, magazines, books, blogs and other content from multiple publishers.

The Skiff Reader is the first of many new products according to the company.
