BT has announced it has become the first UK internet service provider to pass the 5 million customers mark with the milestone hit on 9 December.

The 5-millionth customer was chip shop worker Elizabeth Patterson of East Kilbride, Glasgow who has won a trip to Vancouver to watch the Winter Olympics.

BT says broadband take-up is growing with the final 1 million customers racked up in little over 2 years.

John Petter, managing director of BT's consumer division, said: "We are thrilled to have passed the five million mark and it's now full speed ahead for six million".

"Broadband has the ability to transform people's lives and the fact that we are still showing strong take-up when there are more than 14 million ADSL broadband customers in the UK is testament to the unique benefits of being connected".
