UK viewers rack up an average of 3.8 hours a day in 2008

The UK population is in greater danger than ever before from becoming square-eyed, according to Ofcom stats just released that show Britain has seen the highest increase in TV watching across a selection of Western countries.

Comparing the average UK TV viewer's watching habits with those from France, Germany, Italy, the United States, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden and Ireland, and the UK has seen the highest average increase in TV watching during 2008, up by 3.2% to an average of 3.8 hours a day.

While those in the United States manage to cram in an average of 4.6 hours a day of goggle-boxing, the UK's levels are higher that most European averages which level out at around 3.5 hours a day.

The UK also scored highly when looking at how many of us had switched over to digital television with hitting 88%.

So why has TV viewing seen an increase? Is there better programming to enjoy? Were we all staying in more in 2008? Or are we following the Americans' lead in consuming more TV than ever before?
