Chip-maker Broadcom has announced the launch of a new processor that will see phones incorporating high-def camcorders that could snap up to 20-megapixel pictures.
The new Broadcom BCM2763 VideoCore IV Processor enables Full HD 1080p camcorder capabilities in a handset as well as a 20-megapixel digital camera with advanced features such as multiple shots per second, image stabilisation, face and smile detection and panorama mode.
In addition, the new chip will bring the ability to render mobile games natively at up to 1080p resolution, which in combination with an on-board HDMI output, would allow a console-quality gaming experience on large screen HDTVs.
Using 40 nanometer CMOS process technology, the VideoCore IV claims a smaller footprint size and lower power consumption than 65nm designs.
It will be a little while before we see such super-phones hit the market, Broadcom is currently sampling the processor (pricing not disclosed) with handsets featuring the tech expected in 2011.
