20-megapixel, 1080p-capable cameraphones due in 2011

Broadcom's new processor will see DSLR-quality mobiles

16 December 2009 14:36 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Chip-maker Broadcom has announced the launch of a new processor that will see phones incorporating high-def camcorders that could snap up to 20-megapixel pictures.

The new Broadcom BCM2763 VideoCore IV Processor enables Full HD 1080p camcorder capabilities in a handset as well as a 20-megapixel digital camera with advanced features such as multiple shots per second, image stabilisation, face and smile detection and panorama mode.

In addition, the new chip will bring the ability to render mobile games natively at up to 1080p resolution, which in combination with an on-board HDMI output, would allow a console-quality gaming experience on large screen HDTVs.

Using 40 nanometer CMOS process technology, the VideoCore IV claims a smaller footprint size and lower power consumption than 65nm designs.

It will be a little while before we see such super-phones hit the market, Broadcom is currently sampling the processor (pricing not disclosed) with handsets featuring the tech expected in 2011.

  • Oh come on, people! How are we supposed to take your digital camera coverage seriously when you describe this as leading to "DSLR quality mobiles"?

Do you really believe that squeezing 20 megapixels into a cameraphone is going to lead to better image quality?

  • It will depend entirely on the sensor. The ISP in this processor is very high quality, and has some pretty good imaging software inside that can certainly produce very high quality images, but you are limited by the sensor. Going to 20MP does give more scope to the software to improve the image, even with a cheaper lens/sensor.

On the otherhand, is also does 1080P video record and playback (via HDMI if plug added by the phone maker) which is pretty amazing from your camera phone.
