Google starts mysterious countdown timer

Google has set a mysterious countdown timer ticking away that is only revealed when a visitor to its search engine hits the "feeling lucky" button on the homepage.

Speculation is rife across the Internet as to what the online giant might be counting down to with this latest "Easter Egg" stunt.

It seems if you take US time into consideration, the timer will end at New Year, so it's perfectly plausible that it's been created to mark the start of 2010 and the new decade.

But, while conspiracy theorists are suggesting a more sinister end, some think it could mark the launch of the new Nexus One Android phone from Google.

That, or Google's 2 years ahead of schedule in becoming self-aware. We will keep you posted.
