TeliaSonera launches world's first commercial 4G

Scandinavian telecoms operator TeliaSonera has become the first network in the world to offer a commercial 4G service. It'll be available initially in both Stockholm in Sweden and Oslo in Norway.

4G is basically a faster version of 3G and HSDPA. It allows a step change in the data speeds you can get to a mobile phone or USB dongle - as high as ten times in lab conditions. That should dramatically increase the quality of streaming video or audio to the device over a data connection, but also the quality of voice calls.

Kenneth Karlberg, president and head of mobility services at TeliaSonera, said: "We are very proud to be the first operator in the world to offer our customers 4G services. The use of mobile broadband in the Nordic countries is exploding and customers need higher speeds and capacity. This is why we launch 4G services in both Stockholm and Oslo".

The network plans to roll out nationwide 4G across Sweden, Norway and Finland, starting with the largest cities in Sweden and Norway. We'll keep you updated of its progress, as well as the rollout of 4G in the UK.
